Tutorial: Active References

One of the most powerful features of the IntelliTape is "active references".  Whenever you click on a previous item in the "Entry" column, ActiCalc copies that number to the data entry window.  From that point forward, this number is used exactly as if you had entered it manually.  However, if you click on a previous number in the "Balance" column, you create an active reference.  In the example at the left, the first two numbers (123 and 456) were entered manually. then we pressed the "/" key, followed by a click on the balance in row 1 (123).  If you then enter another operator, the equal, or enter key, this value will be saved on the IntelliTape.  To the right of the entry, you see the designation "[B1]", meaning that this is an active reference to the balance in row 1.

Any editing you do that changes the balance in row 1 will automatically change the entry in row 3.  In this example, we have
changed the entry in row 1 to 15.9.  Notice how the entry in row 3 has changed.

You can make as many active references as you like.  The Active References feature effectively gives you an infinite number of memory registers.

If you click on a balance item, and then modify the number before registering it on the tape, then it is not an active reference.  The modified number is treated exactly as if you had entered the entire number manually.

You may notice that certain complex operations, like +xxx%, automatically add active references to your tape.
